The Hauz Khas Complex – Where History Meets Modern Age

The name Hauz Khas derived from words “Hauz, which means water tank and “Khas” means roayal or special. Now one can easily imagine what this place all about is. Hauz Khas village or complex built by Allauddin Khilji of the Khilaji dynasty in 13th century. It was built to supply water to the urban area of that time.
Later on in 14th century, in the regime of Firuj Shah Tughlaq, many structures like mosques, tombs were built. In 1980 the area was developed as an upper class residential colony and commercial centre.
The water tank was built on approx.  124 acres area with dimension of 600 meters width, 700 meters length and 4 meters depth. Now the tank size has been reduced because of encroachment around it. The tank was dry due to negligence but in 2004 the government took a decision to restore it and full it with water again. Now this place has become one of the most beautiful place in Delhi.
Around the tank there are many monuments from 13th century to 16th century. There is a Madarsa (Islamic School), Pavilions, a mosque, Firuj Shah’s tomb. Now a light and sound show is organised daily evening, which showcase the life and time of that historical era. One can visit the historical complex every day from 10AM to 6PM.

Now the commercial area around the Hauz Khas complex is called the Hauz Khas village. It has become the most happening place in Delhi, where you can find more than 50 pubs, disks and restaurants. The place is very popular among youths and foreigners who want to enjoy night life of Delhi.
